Canada Endorses the Un Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

The Canadian Human Rights Commission congratulates the Government of Canada on its endorsement of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
"I applaud the Government of Canada for embracing the fundamental principle that are defined in the Declaration", said CHRC Acting Chief Commissioner David Langtry. "This step symbolises a commitment to equality, respect and cooperation with Aboriginal peoples." With its formal endorsement of the UN Declaration, Canada joins the international community in a demonstration of its dedication to improving the conditions of Indigenous people, at home and around the world.
Now that the Declaration has been endorsed, the real work begins – making the rights expressed therein a reality in the day-to-day lives of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada.
The Commission has been working closely with its partners to advance, promote and protect the rights of Aboriginal peoples across the country. Next week's Discrimination Prevention Forum, set in Winnipeg, is an example of these joint efforts. At the Forum, participants will address issues linked to the UN Declaration such as balancing individual and collective rights, the design of independent Aboriginal dispute resolution processes, and consideration of First Nations legal traditions and customary laws.
"The challenge we now face is to build on our past successes— to continue to work with Aboriginal communities to develop a human rights system that fosters and sustains mutual respect and enhances human rights for all Canadians" said Acting Chief Commissioner Langtry.
